The Planets

The planets in Vedic astrology are called Grahas, which means “to grasp”, or “to take hold of.” These heavenly bodies circling our solar system are the energies being expressed in our birth charts. Planets are not just big rocks or giant orbs of gas, they are conscious energy fields that influence every aspect of our everyday lives. From our physical health to our mental and emotional well-being, to our relationships, and even our finances, planets are the energy fields that color and shape our realities. And by understanding them we gain greater insight into our own lives and the lives of those around us.

There are nine planets (Grahas) used in the Vedic system: The Sun (Surya), The Moon (Chandra), Mercury (Budha), Venus (Shukra), Mars (Kuja or Mangala), Jupiter (Guru), Saturn (Shani), and the shadow planets: Rahu and Ketu – the North and South Nodes of the Moon, respectively.

Now that we’ve introduced the planets, let’s take a look at their meanings and how they affect us and our lives.

The Sun

Surya

sun

The Sun sits in the center of our solar system and it’s the most important celestial body. It radiates immense heat, making life on Earth possible. As ruler of Leo, the Sun is commonly referred to as the “King” in Vedic astrology. It is the soul of your birth chart; a luminary bringing light and illuminating the house where it resides. The Sun tells you about your ego and indicates who you are. It’s the power source of your spirit and your life force providing you with energy. It represents your physical body, strength, vitality, and how you express your will. The Sun also represents the Father and father figures in your life. If you want to know about fame, recognition, or your soul’s purpose, then look to the Sun – it’s where you truly shine.

The Moon

Chandra

moon

While the Sun is your outward expression, the Moon reflects your inner workings and emotional needs. This is the second luminary and is the ruler of Cancer. Look to the Moon to learn about what you need to feel safe, secure, and at home. Being a feminine “planet”, the Moon takes you inward, helping you deepen your intuition, find healing, and connect with your deepest desires. The Moon represents the Mother, feminine energy, past lives, popularity, the subconscious mind, and being receptive. If you have a well-developed Moon, you are nurturing and you don’t let your emotions get the best of you. In contrast, if you are someone with a poorly developed Moon, you can be moody, overemotional, and insecure. Finding the Moon’s house placement in your birth chart gives you insights into the areas of your life that feel safe and can tell you what you need to do for self-care.

Mercury

Budha

Mercury

The fastest planet zipping around the Sun is Mercury. Named after Hermes, the messenger God and ruler of Gemini and Virgo, this planet has dominion over communication, commerce, ideas, and technology. Mercury affects your communication style and how you express yourself. In this technology-driven society, you’re constantly working with Mercury. Be it through conversations, emails, texting, or even social media comments, this planet is almost always front and center. Additionally, Mercury guides you towards learning about the things that spark your curiosity and then helps you share them with the world. At its best, a well-developed Mercury can indicate that you are clever, curious, and engaging, with a clear and concise communication style. When Mercury is at its worst, it can make you anxious, nervous, and overly critical of others. Find Mercury’s astrological house placement to learn about the areas in life where you best express yourself.

Venus

Shukra

Venus

Ruler of Taurus and Libra, Venus is known for its influence over love, relationships, luxuries, and life’s pleasures. This planet is all about how you relate to others and where you find beauty in the world. Venus also rules over money and values and can tell you a lot about how you bring peace and stability into your life. The house Venus resides in tells you about the area of life that brings you the most pleasure, how you indulge, and where you’ll easily connect with others. You can also look to Venus to learn about your relationship with money and what you value. A well-balanced Venus brings peace to you and those around you. It represents beauty, charm, sensuality, and pleasure. An unbalanced or damaged Venus is expressed through being over-indulgent, self-centered, and a bit lazy.

Mars

Kuja or Mangala

Mars

Aggression, passion, and conflict all fall under the Martian influence. Ruler of Aries and Scorpio, Mars is the planet that shows you how to fight to survive – it’s your will-power and your Primal nature. It’s what you access when you’re put in situations where you need to assert yourself. Mars can tell you about how to express your anger, where you find passion and drive, and the things that inspire you to take action. Unsurprisingly, a poorly-expressed Mars can make you appear angry, aggressive, selfish, and impatient. When Mars is well-expressed, it shows your courage, strength, and determination. It can make you confident and stand up for what you believe in. When analyzing your birth chart, Mars can tell you where you find passion and drive, but also the area in your life that might bring you conflict and strife.

Jupiter

Guru

Jupiter

Where you find Jupiter, you’ll find abundance, blessings, ease, and excess. This planet rules over both Sagittarius and Pisces – signs that enjoy freedom, creativity, and spirituality. Jupiter encourages you to explore the world, seek spiritual experiences, and pursue higher education and knowledge. It indicates children, spiritual teachers, religion, philosophy, wealth, and long-distance travel. In addition, Jupiter represents the husband in a woman’s chart. Its placement can also tell you where you’ll find general ease and luck in your life. Because this planet allows things to flow without too much effort, it’s essential to be aware that this ease may also make you prone to laziness, over-indulgence, and blind faith. However, a balanced Jupiter brings a sense of fairness, cheerful optimism, and an overall happy disposition.

Saturn

Shani

Saturn

One of the more difficult planets to experience in your chart, Saturn’s painstaking job is to liberate you from your samskaras (karmas). It is the bringer of difficult lessons, boundaries, discipline, and structure. Ruling over both Capricorn and Aquarius, Saturn is the last planet seen with the naked eye. Where Jupiter showers you with blessings and gifts, Saturn makes you work hard to obtain your desires. It’s not until you’ve proven your worth that Saturn bestows you with rewards. This serious energy makes this planet one of the most dreaded and misunderstood. Thus, indicating limitations, setbacks, and delays. But even though Saturn may put you through a hard time, know there are always blessings if you work for them. In your natal chart, Saturn shows you where you’ll find struggle and hard-earned lessons. When poorly expressed, this planet can indicate a person who’s overly serious, cold, and pessimistic. A well-expressed Saturn makes someone responsible, patient, and hard-working.

Rahu

North Node

Rahu

Rahu is the North Node of the Moon and does not rule any zodiac signs in Vedic astrology. It is a mathematical point in the sky and is considered to be a very powerful “shadow planet” causing eclipses of the two luminaries, the Sun and the Moon. Rahu is the serpent’s head without the body. It is our thinking mind and it carries a dominating influence on our subconscious desires and hidden passions. Rahu can bring you worldly success, prestige, and fulfillment, as well as create obsessive-compulsive disorders. It is Maya – the illusion of the material realm. Rahu can grant you fame, fortune, and all your earthly desires, but it will come with a hefty price tag. Any planet in your chart that’s within the vicinity of Rahu will be magnified tremendously. Insatiable and always hungry for more, Rahu goes to the extreme and is never satisfied.

Ketu

South Node
Ketu

Ketu is the South Node of the Moon and it does not rule any zodiac signs. In Vedic astrology, it is considered a “shadow planet,” just like Rahu, and often feared because it can bring sudden changes, losses, endings, and chaos. Ketu is the serpent’s body without the head, indicating it bestows its natives with wisdom, intuition, spiritual insights, and mystical powers. It also represents spirituality, enlightenment, and liberation from the past. Ketu is a karmic planet and our connection to the Divine. Its placement in your birth chart can show past-life karmas and areas of your life where you need to let go of the past and move on. Ketu is known as a planet of detachment, and its energy can help you let go of attachments to material things. If it is well-placed in your birth chart, it can also bring good fortune, wealth, and success. Ketu is an important planet in Vedic astrology, and its presence should not be ignored. It represents a powerful force that should be used wisely. Ketu can bring about change and rebirth, and its energy can help you start anew and make positive changes in your life.

The Outer Planets

The following planets are known as “generational planets,” which means their path in the sky is so slow that an entire generation of people shares each planet in a common sign. These outer planets are not used in Vedic astrology. However, they reflect the collective unconscious and can provide a deeper understanding and an added dimension to any natal chart reading.

Uranus

Uranus

Individuality, innovation, and chaos all fall under Uranus’ domain. Uranus doesn’t rule any signs in Vedic astrology, though modern western astrologers give this planet dominion over Aquarius. Uranus likes to shake things up in unexpected and sometimes uncomfortable ways. But it’s not for nothing. There is always a method to the madness, and often it brings much-needed change. Uranian transits can spark technological and medical advances, social uprisings, and even catastrophic natural events. But you’ll often find innovation birthed from chaos. Uranus in your chart tells you where you like to think outside the box and act in unique and original ways. When well-expressed, Uranus will indicate a progressive, quirky, and interesting character. If it’s poorly expressed, the person can become a “rebel without a cause,” acting in a sometimes harmful and irresponsible manner.

Neptune

Neptune

Neptune is a bit dreamy and a little delusional. It has rulership over the unconscious mind, addictions, the media, illusion, psychic abilities, and other nebulous and intangible things. Like Uranus, this planet has no rulership over any zodiac signs in Vedic astrology, though modern western astrologers pair this planet with Pisces. Neptune’s expression in your chart shines a light on how you escape from reality. But it also affects the places in your life where you’re unafraid to dream big. A balanced Neptune shows you how to follow your intuition, and is compassionate, spiritual, and creative. However, an unbalanced Neptune creates a sense of delusion, escapism, and addiction.

Pluto

Pluto

On the far reaches of our solar system is Pluto, the planet that rules over death, rebirth, and transformation. Modern western astrologers associate Pluto with Scorpio, though Vedic astrologers don’t give it rulership over any sign. It brings forth truth and encourages you to explore the deeper meaning. Pluto is often considered a malefic planet, but its energy can be harnessed for good. It will show you where you need to surrender and let go of the past to make way for new beginnings. Pluto’s power can be used to create positive change in your life. It is a powerful planet associated with the phoenix rising from the ashes. Where Pluto resides in your natal chart is where you’ll experience the most profound and dramatic transformation in your life. Positive Plutonian energy brings honesty, depth, and a willingness to explore the truth. Dark Plutonian energy brings fear of change, obsessive behaviors, and a desire for power and domination. In addition, it also rules big money, governments, and corporate corruption.
